Santiago Apoala is a small town located in a valley in the Mixtec region of Oaxaca near a gorgeous canyon. The town itself is quite picturesque and you can hike up into the river valley canyon (the river feeds the farms below).
The joy of Apoala is the mix of canyon hiking, swimming, and the sheer remoteness of the place. You’ll feel very far away from the rest of the world and Mexico.
Apoala is difficult to get to but absolutely worth the hassle. You’ll first need to take a van (with Transportes Turisticos Nochixtlán S.A. de C.V.) to a town called Nochixtlán. From there, a ‘comunitario’ van will leave at midday (one per day) to get you to Apoala.
